Spain Viewed By Sportsbook Fans Claiming the World Cup

July 15th, 2010

Spain was the fave in free sportsbook betting against holland in the World Cup final and they came away with a 1-0 win as Andres Iniesta scored a goal late in added time.

Since the game went beyond regulation time, for those that bet the game on the three-way line at the online sportsbook it was the draw that was the winner.

Sportsbook odds for soccer betting posted Spain as the fave to win the World Cup before the competition began and although they scored only eight total goals in the competition, Spain won the World Cup for the first time in their history. It was a bitter defeat for holland who ended second for the 3rd time in their history. For the only goal of the game, Andres Iniesta scored a goal late in extra time. After defender John Heitinga got a red card in the 19th minute of extra time holland was playing with only 10 men. Spain genuinely put on the pressure after holland was shorthanded and Iniesta took a solid pass from Cesc Fabregas and was able to get a chance just past Holland goalie Maarten Steklenburg.

A record number of yellow cards were handed out, so the game between holland and Spain was pretty physical right from the start. Neither squad had a great number of chances as each squad got 4 shots on goal but both goalkeepers made major saves. Spain’s Iker Casillas landed a fantastic kick save on Arjen Robben in the 62nd minute to hold the game scoreless. Including a save on Sergio Ramos early in the game, Steklenburg also had his moments.

Spain had the better of the chances throughout the match but the Netherlands made sure that Spain didn’t get through easily. It was one too many fouls that cost holland ultimately. Heitinga pulled back Iniesta when he was trying to take a pass from Xavi that would have set him clear. It saved a clear scoring chance, so it was most likely a solid foul. Spain didn’t convert the ensuing free kick but with holland down to 10 men, Spain ramped up the pressure and Iniesta scored a goal just minutes before the game would have gone to a penalty shootout.

Since the draw was the victor on the three-way line and the 1-0 final meant the game went under the total, the low scoring game and the added time win were excellent results for the online sportsbook.

The best part? The now well-known Paul, a Berlin octopus who has accurately selected the champions of several World Cup games, predicted the victor of this game also. Any person following Paul consistently in the World Cup wagering must have come away somewhat richer.

In addition to the final game on Sunday, a game to determine 3rd place was held Saturday between Germany and Uruguay. In a 3-2 win, Germany won the game. Uruguay were not supposed to make it this far in any way, so they ought to be proud of their accomplishments, nonetheless. And for the second time consecutively, Germany has taken 3rd place.
